When considering strategy communication we (might) need to break down the audience type to understand what level of information they need (/want). It’s also likely the communication type may change. I’ve attempted to outline this below.
As I currently see it there are three different core audience types; SLT, Working Group & Invested Employees. Of course this could be broken down further but isolating it to three types simplifies the work required.
Here I have broken down how each party might want to view the strategy and why:
Audience | About | Type of Comms |
---|---|---|
Senior Leadership Team | • Responsible for company success | |
• Time poor so want it short | ||
• Need to be able to input and comment | • Short Slides Document | |
Working Group | • Actively working on the product | |
• Need to be able to update information regularly | ||
• Want to be notified of changes | • Single Document or space e.g. Lucid | |
Invested Employees | • Have their own product to worry about | |
• Don’t want too much detail | ||
• Likely high level context and ability to refer back to it | • Short summary | |
• 5 mins or less | ||
• Slides + Recording | ||
Long form of the strategy will be available for all to read. |
I have chosen a document format as there is still a lot of information to convey. A slide would be ok but that is best for presenting. I want a space the team can come to and review individually and ask questions before reviewing the points together. Likely contents:
Single document with multiple sections. Although this is labelled as ‘communication’ really this is a way of working on the components of the strategy together as a team. Key sections:
